Milfontes to Almograve 15 km


 A short day, needed one, what was so great is that Patty was able to do it with us. I know from experience that the kind of injury she
had still hurts and she soldiers on without any complaints, great to walk all together again.

 We stopped early before breakfast and go ripped of on the price, but,,, oh well.

We took the tiny ferry across the river Mira as it saved us some time. We got to meet the at lady near the ferry, she only has 25 cats, knows each ones name, and feeds them daily because the town who used to feed them, cut out their cat budget, what a nice lady. Her hubby drives the ferry.








The estuary, I felt like I was on a Disney ride it was so small, and Bill was just excited we let him steer.

 All day was just spectacular, the trail led along the coastline, but a lot of it was a few hundred feet back from the coast and the sand was harder under foot.

 We did a lot of cross crossing and would go inland through wooded forests, dark cool vegetative tunnels, and back onto the cliff edges.






 At one point I traversed down the cliffs onto the beach, took off ,y shirt and boots and walked along the seas edge.  Loved every minute, until I had to climb out by rope, but before that, I had to put my boots back on, sand and wet socks and all, was it worth the detour, yup.







Closing in on today’s destination, I got a little worried as I thought I had missed a turn sign, as it turned our, I was ok.




I walked into town and at the first cafe sat my trail mates, and from about 200 yards away, I heard someone say,” make that three beers” , I love these guys

  The hilltop castle Santiago do Casem is this cute village that’s very typical of the rural area of the Alentejo region, it’s old center is all cobbled streets that head up to the castle atop a prominent hill. Walking the Fisherman’s Way ,and The Historical Way “2021”

THE BEGINNING,   It feels strange, with the Covid pandemic and two years of minor isolation at home, I finally get to go and do one thing I love,,,,WALK. Not just to walk, but to Ultra Walk, to experience new countries and new people, to get that warm burn in my legs from the uphill climbs, and the ache at the end of a long day of hiking on the "way", To drink local red wine at sunset and to eat clean food in a tiny local  beachside cafe with my friends. Day two- to Cercal du Alentajo

 10-17-21 After yesterday, we were a little apprehensive for this leg. Started out earlier and made our way to the trail. In order to find accommodation, we had to go 5 miles off trail, today we have to back track that and get back on the trail in order to get to Cercal.  Lucky it’s overcast today again, but our spirits were a bit better after a great meal last night. I am not sure what it was yesterday , was it really that bad, or am I getting soft after two years of not walking?, I think it’s a little bit of both.
