Carrapateira to Vila do Bispo

Second last leg and we are going to split it between the Historical Way and the Fisherman’s.  This will give us some coastal walking rather than all inland trails today




We couldn’t find any coffee this morning in this little village, a bit if a setback

Never the less, off we went, past the clam diggers monument and out towards the coast. Holy crap, it seems every time we go off the beaten trail, we get punished.





We had a hell spent time climbing up over the headland, but it ended up with a great beach walk to the next headland which was the toughest part of this whole trail by far

This climb was never ending and straight up for I think , an hour



After finishing the climb we had to head inland in a dirt track for 6 miles, through eucalyptus as usual. 

Made our way into this town just after lunch and had a meat stew to refuel.

There is something different about this walk, have not quite put my finger on it, but different.

We ate dinner in ourapertment tonight after walking the town




Not much going on in this town either,but they do have a good supermarket  with good cheeses and breads, so that and a little vino made for dinner.


Tomorrow we walk to the end, always a wired feeling, not a long walk but it’s longer taking the ocean route, we will take that way as I’d hate to finish this with a walk alongside the highway into Sagres.

I think I know the way because i can almost see the end from here.

    Wowza! You roughed it out!! Sounds a bit challenging- I think maybe because you’ll got lost or took the long route- is maybe why this is a different walk for you… maybe??? Lisa 😘

  The hilltop castle Santiago do Casem is this cute village that’s very typical of the rural area of the Alentejo region, it’s old center is all cobbled streets that head up to the castle atop a prominent hill. Walking the Fisherman’s Way ,and The Historical Way “2021”

THE BEGINNING,   It feels strange, with the Covid pandemic and two years of minor isolation at home, I finally get to go and do one thing I love,,,,WALK. Not just to walk, but to Ultra Walk, to experience new countries and new people, to get that warm burn in my legs from the uphill climbs, and the ache at the end of a long day of hiking on the "way", To drink local red wine at sunset and to eat clean food in a tiny local  beachside cafe with my friends. Day two- to Cercal du Alentajo

 10-17-21 After yesterday, we were a little apprehensive for this leg. Started out earlier and made our way to the trail. In order to find accommodation, we had to go 5 miles off trail, today we have to back track that and get back on the trail in order to get to Cercal.  Lucky it’s overcast today again, but our spirits were a bit better after a great meal last night. I am not sure what it was yesterday , was it really that bad, or am I getting soft after two years of not walking?, I think it’s a little bit of both.
